Beachbody has finally released Body Beast, a home workout program that focuses purely on hypertrophy, the term used to describe increasing muscle mass, muscle size, and enhancing muscle growth. Now with it’s release, everyone has a home workout program that is guaranteed to add 10 pounds to your frame by following the Body Beast muscle mass gainer guidelines. For 90 days you will be trained by professional bodybuilder, Sagi Kalev, who has graced the covers of Men’s Workout, Iron Man, and Muscle and Fitness magazine. But does the program live up to the hype? Read on with my Body Beast review to find out.
Coach Superdave Recommends Body Beast
If you aren’t seeing results in the gym or at home, then this workout is for you. This program is for anyone whom’s primary goal is to increase muscle growth and size. I don’t merely mean muscular definition and having ripped, lean body. I mean to add more muscle mass size and weight to your body frame. This program is especially good for the ectomorph body type, naturally skinny from a high metabolism that also makes it difficult to add muscle and weight. Regardless of your reasons, it is advisable to have a solid fitness foundation before attempting Body Beast as this home workout program uses very advanced weight lifting techniques.

Best Mass Gainer Workout
Those of you that have graduated from P90X will transition well into the Body Beast routine. Especially if you have been following my P90X Mass Gainer schedule that uses advanced weight lifting techniques. Not only are some of the P90X set techniques present in Body Beast, but the muscle groups used in the first block are similarity grouped. However, don’t let the workout names such as Chest and Back fool you as this program takes resistance training to a whole new level, practiced and perfected by champion bodybuilder, Sagi Kalev.
Sagi Kalev introduces Dynamic Set Training, which is a combination of old school weight lifting techniques and the latest developments in sports science, to achieve the goal of muscle growth and hypertrophy. Translation? Expect to work harder than you even have before!
You will be doing a wide variety of advanced weight lifting techniques such as Super Sets, Giant Sets, Multi Sets, Forced Sets, Combo Sets, Circuit sets, Tempo Sets, Progressive sets and so on. Each set focuses on a specific technique that forces your body to constantly recruit muscle fibers. Translation? Think P90X Muscle Confusion, but in BEAST mode! Not a single muscle fiber will be spared which will lead to awesome muscle growth, but expect to be sore! This is one reason why proper recovery time, nutrition, and supplementation is vital for successful muscle growth and killer Body Beast results.
Each week in the program comprises of 6 days of training with one day of rest. However, unlike other programs, nearly every day is devoted to only resistance training. Since muscle growth is the primary goal, there is very little cardio in this workout program. Of course, you will still burn calories from all this iron pumping, but keeping the cardio to a minimum both allows us to focus our energy on the weight lifting and to keep our calorie burn down. If you burn too many calories, you have no choice but to eat more. In fact, I have been training many of my P90X clients in this same practice for those looking to build muscle mass with P90X.
Get Body Beast Results!
Do not ignore the dangers of overtraining, which will actually cause your muscle growth results to plateau. The increased load of weight training from this program may be too much for the inexperienced and it is paramount that you have the proper nutrition when doing the program. Be sure to read the nutrition and supplement section later in my Body Beast review. If the program is too much for you, or you are looking to lose some weight while gaining muscle, then you can follow the Lean Beast schedule.

The program is broken down to 3 main blocks, or phases, of training. Much like with P90X2, each individual can choose how long to stay in a specific block to achieve their desirable results before moving on to the next block.
Build. This first block uses more traditional weight lifting techniques comprised of synergistic muscle groups similar to P90X. For example, one day is Chest and Triceps. Basically, you will be exhausting multiple muscle groups and therefore exhausting more muscle fibers, all resulting in building a very strong physical and muscle foundation.
Bulk. This is the main phase for muscle growth as each workout focuses on one major muscle group to completely assault your muscles and giving maximum muscle growth gains. Whereas synergistic moves provide more balanced growth in muscle and strength, focusing on one major muscle group at a time will increase hypertrophy.
BEAST. This block is when you lean out, get shredded, and get ripped. This is as close you will get to cardio and you will be spending more days using the unique Tempo workouts. If you order Body Beast here at my site, you will also get the Lucky 7 workout that you can use during this block as well.
The Body Beast Workouts
Total run time of the workouts vary depending on the training block you are in. Build workouts can be anywhere from 38-50 min where as the Bulk workouts are shorter and around 30 min. Overall, I’m pleased that this program kept the time down. This is preferred since you will be lifting weights nearly every day and don’t want to overtrain. You might be wondering why the main Bulk block has the shortest workouts times, but since you are blasting only one muscle group in each workout, you will get exhausted extremely fast. If you still have energy after one of the Bulk workouts, then you aren’t lifting enough. In fact, your body should be toast after every workout!
BUILD: Chest and Triceps (Chest/ Tris) • Focused on the muscles of your chest and triceps
BUILD: Back and Biceps (Back/Bis) • Creating that V shape, bigger lats, traps, rhomboids, and biceps
BUILD: Legs • Focuses on powerful quads, hamstrings, calves, and glutes
BUILD: Shoulders • Shoulders create the tone of your entire physique
BULK: Chest • Bulk your pecs from different angles and exercises to hit different muscle fibers
BULK: Back • Create a massive back and focus on hypertrophy
BULK: Shoulders • Focus more on the posterior deltoid (rear shoulder) creating an even more 3D appearance.
BULK: Arms • Create huge biceps and triceps
BULK: Legs • Transform “chicken legs” into tree trunks
BEAST: Abs • Not just for looks, create a strong core
BEAST: Cardio • A highly new-school performance-oriented cardio workout
BEAST: Total Body • A circuit routine for your entire body
TEMPO: Chest and Triceps (Chest/ Tris)
TEMPO: Back and Biceps (Back/Bis)
Nothing creates hypertrophy quite like Tempo Sets, where you actually feel your muscles grow!

Body Beast Nutrition and Diet Plan
As with all Beachbody programs, this program includes a comprehensive nutrition and diet plan. The recipes are fantastic and easy to make, which is important for any meal plan you follow. It also reminds me a lot of the Ultimate Reset diet plan, as it is mostly dairy free and uses goat cheese and coconut milk as substitutes to regular cow’s milk. There are several recipes that use the Body Beast Base Shake, the awesome new flavorless protein powder.
Thankfully, Body Beast has a very good formula for calculating your calorie goal based not only your goals, but your current body fat percentage as well. I also applaud their recommended % macronutrient (protein, fat, carbohydrate) breakdown, as it is more up to date with current trends. The high protein and low fat diet is something I struggle to get my clients away from as high protein amounts is overrated and often unnecessary whereas healthy fats are crucial for muscle recovery and optimal health.
Similar to P90X, there are sections showing food lists with calorie breakdowns as well as a portion plan to follow. Plus there is a recipe list for mass gainer shakes for those looking to add more calories and weight. Overall, I am impressed with the diet plan as it is the most complete nutrition plan I have seen released by Beachbody. Time to Beast Up!
Body Beast Supplements Review
In general, proper nutrition is crucial for optimal muscle growth and recovery and Body Beast workouts will hammer your body. Therefore its is extremely vital that you use proper supplementation in addition to your Body Beast nutrition plan. The following supplements will greatly enhance your muscle growth gains and expect to see full in-depth reviews of these supplements from me very soon.
Edit: I have a new section for all the Body Beast natural bodybuilding supplement reviews here.
Think all protein is the same? Think again. One dosage of Body Beast Base Shake has a blend of 18 grams of both slow and fast digesting proteins which has been proven to aid muscle recovery and muscle growth far greater than simply the fast digesting whey protein alone. Plus I applaud Beachbody for making it flavorless, which eliminates the need for unhealthy artificial and processed flavoring, while allowing it to mix with any meal item without distorting its flavor.
The Base Shake also includes a small amount of dextrose, a fast digesting sugar, which will aid in glycogen replenishment. Overall, this protein mixes with virtually anything extremely well and is an easy way to add more protein in your Body Beast diet.
Contrary to what the name implies, this is NOT an alternative to the Energy and Endurance Preworkout Formula. This is actually a post workout formula similar to the P90X Recovery and Results drink, but with more emphasis on fast digesting carbohydrates. The more you fatigue your muscles, the more glycogen (carbohydrate energy) you need back in your muscles. Not only to facilitate muscle growth, but to prevent possible muscle loss. This is SUPER important, get this right or you won’t see great Body Beast results!!
The benefits of Creatine Monohydrate has been inexhaustibly studied in years past by and they all have shown to have proven results to help with weight training. Need I say more? Use Creatine! Other forms of creatine have also been proven to give no additional benefit so don’t waste your time.
This is the supplement I have been waiting for! In a nutshell, Suma Root belongs to the naturally occurring Ecdysteroids. This will help in natural testosterone production yet is in no way related to the well known and harmful , pharmaceutical anabolic steroids. This is a rare testosterone booster supplement and something anybody should be on whether its Body Beast, P90X, INSANITY Asylum, etc. Make sure to get some!
What Equipment do I need for Body Beast?
- Chin Up Max (Pull Up Assist bands)
Even though resistance bands work fantastic in any program, I highly recommend weights vs bands with Body Beast. Mostly because many of the moves will have to be heavily improvised or ignored if you have bands, but also so we can lift big! Plus, similar to the Beachbody Les Mills PUMP program, Body Beast heavily emphasizes an EZ Curl Barbell.
Unfortunately, all of the above items are not included in a Body Beast package, so you need to order them separately at the my TeamBeachbody store. If you only have dumbbell free weights and not a EZ Curl Barbell, then you can improvise by watching the workout videos, but you will miss out on some of the better compound (Multi muscle group), or complex, exercises. Like with most programs, as your strength improves you will be needing heavier weights. Therefore, I highly recommend the Bowflex Selecttech adjustable dumbbell weights. I LOVE my SelectTech weights as they are easy to configure and save both room space and money.
Having a bench is critical for stabilizing your body in order to isolate the muscle groups for a particular exercise. If you don’t have a bench, than get yourself a stability ball. Beachbody makes fantastic stability balls that are much thicker and heavier than other commercial brands. If you are 6 feet or taller, consider going for the larger, gray stability ball.
Please note that by using a stability ball, you are venturing off into P90X2 turf. Balancing on a ball recruits many stabilizer muscles in addition to your body core. This will force you to lower your weight, but will actually increase your overall body strength. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if your primary goal is to only increase muscle growth and size, then you really need a workout exercise bench. However, try propping your stability ball against something solid when doing workouts to isolate yourself more. This should allow you to go a little heavier and get back to more of a Body Beast workout rather than P90X2.

Body Beast Review Conclusion
This is a fantastic workout program to focus on hypertrophy plus it has an excellent nutrition and supplement plan to get successful muscle growth results. Never before have I seen Beachbody release a program with so much detail and attention to getting the best workout results. I highly recommend this for anybody looking for muscle growth gains. My only caveat, is that beginners will have a rough time with this experienced program and in general, the risk of overtraining is real. If I am your Beachbody Coach, I can help guide you through any rough spots and get you some killer muscle growth results. Time to BEAST UP!
