RevAbs Review
Superdave’s RevAbs Review
I was very interested in trying Brett Hoebels’ program after seeing him on Biggest Loser as one of the “Unknown Trainers.” Brett is more than a fitness guru. He’s a Martial Artist in both Capoeira and Muay Thai kickboxing and a pre-med student with a dual major degree in psychology and biology. Very impressive fitness background!
Superdave Recommends RevAbs
Revabs is not the crazy calorie burning machines like P90X and INSANITY, mostly due to the shorter length but also from the more moderate intensity. This is terrific for those starting out with Beachbody® before moving onto the more challenging Beachbody® programs. But for those looking to lose a lot of weight, have more free time, and/or like a challenge, they may be better off with another Beachbody® program like TurboFire, INSANITY, or P90X. For grads that are now fairly lean, the RevAbs will help target and burn that stubborn fat because moderate zones are great for burning fat calories. Of course, anyone looking to develop the abdominal and core area should definitely use RevAbs.
How to get Six Pack Abs
Okay, first off, RevAbs is very different from other Beachbody® programs like P90X and INSANITY. The program is unique in that it focuses on the abdominal muscles with every move! Not only that, but RevAbs works all six major abdominal areas from six different angles.
Most Beachbody® programs do devote some time to the body core, but RevAbs will strengthen your core and abs to much higher levels. My first impression of using the light weights was that it was “too easy,” but I soon discovered that being consistent with the rounds was a lot tougher than I imagined! Brett likes to use light dumbbells with exercise to force the body to stabilize and engage the core. Combine that with slow, high reps of 12-15, and it makes a great workout. This is not a major muscle building program like P90X, instead it focuses on core stability, strength, and endurance.
Here are the highlights:
* 90 day, two phase program with every move engaging the abdominal muscles and core
* Abdominal workouts are the best of any Beachbody® program
* Resistance workouts promote endurance and overall body strength
* Nice blend of Resistance, cardio, and ab routines in each workout
* Only light dumbbells required
* 30-45 min workouts
* “Spice Round” Revs up the challenge
RevAbs Workouts
Every workout has three rounds of repeating Intervals and the third round is the “Spice Round.” This is a nice touch and really ramps up the intensity. For example, one move from Total Strength is to do a deep reverse lunge (like in P90X Legs & Back) while holding light dumbbells pressed against your chest, just under your chin. But for the Spice round, when you stand back up after doing the reverse lunge, you press up with the dumbbells to do a shoulder press. Try doing that 12 times! Phase 2 workouts are slightly longer, and more difficult, than Phase 1 with new twists (literally!) and challenges.
Another interesting aspect of RevAbs is that Brett throws a little cardio into the resistance workouts, and mixes a little resistance workout in his cardio Power Interval routines. I have to admit, having both in the same workout along with abs is really fun. For further motivation, Brett has the “RevZone” where one of the members in the group takes a unique spot/camera angle on the stage and goes to maximum intensity.
“Superdave, what about the Six Pack Abs!!”
Okay, I’m getting there! I will say, without a doubt, that RevAbs has the best ab moves from Beachbody®. Not only does every workout focus on all abdominal muscles and core, but the separate Ab routines (like the P90X AbRipperX add on) are fantastic. He has not one, but two extra ab routines appropriately called Mercy Abs, and Merciless Abs. Are you like me and you feel like you are wasting your time with some of the P90X AbRipperX moves? Well not with these babies! You will feel the burn from all the twists, crunches, planks, and dumbbell moves. Like most of the program, Brett focuses on slow, controlled moves to really feel the burn.
